Degas Degas
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2016 Страниц: 96 Дата загрузки: 16 марта 2019
Capturing fleeting moments: Degas's mastery in the depiction of movementIn terms of both theme and technique, the key to understanding the early work of Edgar Degas (1834 1917) is classical painting. Although he was eventually associated with the Impressionists and even participated in their joint exhibitions, Degas never adopted a purely Impressionist approach. Degas's work, reflecting an extremely personal and psychological perspective, emphasizes the scenic or concentrates on the detail. Thus, Degas s painting is often discussed with reference to the rise of short-exposure photography. Thematically, nature proved less interesting to the artist than the life and inhabitants of the modern metropolis. Degas primarily sought his motifs at the race track or circus, in bedrooms, or in ballet salons and dancers always remained his favorite theme. About the series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions.

Manet Manet

The first of the moderns: Paving the way from Realism to Impressionism Violently criticized during his lifetime for his supposedly provocative paintings, French painterEdouard Manet(1832 1883) is now considered a master of inestimable importance in the history of painting. His 1863 paintingDejeuner sur l herbedepicting two clothed men picnicing with a nude woman now considered one of the most memorable images of the 19th century stirred up controversy for what many considered its vulgar audacity. It was famously rejected by the Paris Salon and exhibited in the Salon des Refuses. Manet s bold style helped pave the way from Realism to Impressionism, and in doing so ushered in the age of modern art.

Pre-Raphaelites Pre-Raphaelites
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2016 Страниц: 96 Дата загрузки: 16 марта 2019
Sometimes considered the first avant-garde art movement, the Pre-Raphaelites rejected their era's dominant artistic theories for what they saw as a more spiritual, naturalistic and intensely personal approach. Fascinated by the romantic aspects of medieval culture and the vivid, jewel-like colors of Quattrocento art, the movement abhored the Classical poses and composition of Raphael and those influenced by him-hence the group's name-and the influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Founded in 1848 by William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the original Pre-Raphaelites were joined by William Michael Rossetti, James Collinson, Frederic George Stephens and Thomas Woolner to form a seven-member brotherhood. Its influence on many later British artists was extensive, and Rossetti's work is now seen as a precursor of the wider European Symbolist movement. This book examines the group's emergence, development, influence, and subsequent demise.

Hiroshige Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Literally meaning pictures of the floating world, ukiyo-e refers to the famous Japanese woodblock print genre that originated in the 17th century and is practically synonymous with the Western world's visual characterization of Japan. Though Hiroshige captured a variety of subjects, his greatest talent was in creating landscapes of his native Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and his most famous work was a series known as 100 Famous Views of Edo (1856-1858). This book provides an introduction to his work and an overview of his career.

Klimt Klimt
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2015 Страниц: 96 Дата загрузки: 16 марта 2018
Gold, flowers and female beauty: The work of the great Austrian symbolist Gustav Klimt's ornate art expresses the apocalyptic atmosphere of Vienna's upper middle-class society around the turn of the 20th century — a society devoted to the cultivation of aesthetic awareness and the cult of pleasure. The ecstatic joy which Klimt (1862-1918) and his contemporaries found — or hoped to find — in beauty was constantly overshadowed by death. And death therefore plays an important role in Klimt's art. Klimt's fame, however, rests on his reputation as one of the greatest erotic painters and graphic artists of his times. His drawings in particular, which have been widely admired for their artistic excellence, are dominated by the sensual portrayal of women.

Jasper Johns Jasper Johns
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2007 Страниц: 96 Дата загрузки: 15 апреля 2011
Though his work is often categorized as Pop Art for its use of popular iconography and household objects, Jasper Johns can also be described as a Neo-Dadaist. Using wax-based paint, plaster relief, collage, and even commonplace objects such as brooms and rulers in his paintings, Johns achieves a sculptural texture in his work. He is arguably most known for his flag paintings of the 1950s (the Museum of Modern Art in New York recently paid over $20 million for White Flag), though other themes, including targets, numbers, letters, and maps, are also famously recurrent. Johns is widely considered one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. Available in over 20 languages, TASCHEN's Basic Art series offers budget-minded readers quality books on the greatest artists of all time. The neat, slick format and nice price tag make Basic Art books perfect for collecting. Every book in the Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist; approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions; and, a concise biography.

Alfred Wertheimer: Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll Alfred Wertheimer: Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2015 Страниц: 360 Дата загрузки: 07 апреля 2019
Elvis who? was photographer Alfred Wertheimer's response when, in early 1956, an RCA Victor publicist asked him to photograph an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis. Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old, Elvis Presley was-as we now know-about to become a legend. Trailing Presley like a shadow, Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom. Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope. Wertheimer's Elvis project immortalized a young man in the very process of making history. Now available as a TASCHEN standard edition, Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll collects Wertheimer's most remarkable Elvis shots from that magical year, along with a selection of his historic 1958 pictures of the star being shipped off to an army base in Germany. Each chapter is illustrated with an original poster created for this book by Hatch Show Print, one of the oldest letterpress print shops in America, which created many early Elvis posters in the 1950s.

The Woodbook: The Complete Plates The Woodbook: The Complete Plates
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2013 Страниц: 768 Дата загрузки: 28 июня 2015
For the love of trees, this is an illustrated encyclopedia of wood types. Culled and assembled by Romeyn Beck Hough between 1888 and 1913 in what still remains a stunning and unparalleled achievement, American Woods — originally published in 14 volumes, with actual specimens mounted on card stock — is a work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for the study of trees and wood. TASCHEN's Woodbook reproduces, in painstaking facsimile, all of the specimen pages from the original volumes; for this purpose we have obtained the use of an extremely rare original set of volumes in very good condition, with minimal damage to the wood cuts. For all trees, now arranged in alphabetical order, three different cross-section cuts of wood are represented (radial, horizontal, and vertical), demonstrating the particular characteristics of the grain and the wealth of colors and textues to be found among the many different wood types. Also included in this special edition are lithographs by Charles Sprague Sargent of the leaves and nuts of most trees, as well as texts describing the trees' geographical origins and physical characteristics. Interior designers, craftspeople, nature enthusiasts, and artists alike will enjoy this beautiful collection of wood samples which includes many trees that are now very rare or completely extinct.

The Elements of Euclid The Elements of Euclid
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2013 Страниц: 396 Дата загрузки: 12 мая 2016
This tile deals with primary elements. It presents Euclid in living color. Nearly a century before Mondrian made geometrical red, yellow, and blue lines famous, 19th century mathematician Oliver Byrne employed the color scheme for the figures and diagrams in his most unusual 1847 edition of Euclid's Elements. The author makes it clear in his subtitle that this is a didactic measure intended to distinguish his edition from all others: The Elements of Euclid in which coloured diagrams and symbols are used instead of letters for the greater ease of learners. As Surveyor of Her Majesty's Settlements in the Falkland Islands, Byrne had already published mathematical and engineering works previous to 1847, but never anything like his edition on Euclid. This remarkable example of Victorian printing has been described as one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the 19th century. Each proposition is set in Caslon italic, with a four-line initial, while the rest of the page is a unique riot of red, yellow, and blue. On some pages, letters and numbers only are printed in color, sprinkled over the pages like tiny wild flowers and demanding the most meticulous alignment of the different color plates for printing. Elsewhere, solid squares, triangles, and circles are printed in bright colors, expressing a verve not seen again on the pages of a book until the era of Dufy, Matisse, and Derain.

Emilio Pucci Emilio Pucci
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2013 Страниц: 416 Дата загрузки: 08 марта 2016
The prince of prints. Pucci's vision and legacy. Emilio Pucci had a passion for women, a visionary sense of style, and an eye for color and design. With these talents he created a fashion house unlike any other. By the early '50s his boutique on the isle of Capri was catering to wealthy sophisticates, heiresses and movie stars buying his Capri pants, silk scarves and lightweight separates. By the end of the decade, Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe were wearing his dresses, and by the mid-60s the label was synonymous with the gilded lifestyle of an international jetset. Today, the house remains as vibrant as ever — Victoria Beckham, Elizabeth Hurley, and Kylie Minogue are adherents — and recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. The Pucci story is a modern epic with its roots in renaissance Italy: the brand's founder, the Marchese Emilio Pucci di Barsento, was a charismatic aristocrat whose lineage extends back to the 14th century. It is a story of evolution: how a family company grew from one tiny store to an international brand with 50 boutiques worldwide (and a presence in 300 more). And finally, it is a tale of innovation: Pucci was one of the first brands to bear a logo, and a pioneer of diversification into interiors, athletic wear and accessories. It introduced free-moving, lightweight fabrics, pop art prints, and a new color palette into womenswear, and constantly pushed fabric and printing technologies. Featuring hundreds of photographs, drawings, and candid shots from the archive of the Emilio Pucci Foundation, this tome captures the breathtaking elegance and drama of a unique brand. Vanessa Friedman's text places Emilio's achievements in the context of fashion history, and provides insight into the remarkable Pucci dynasty.

Logo Modernism Logo Modernism
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2015 Страниц: 432 Дата загрузки: 22 марта 2018
Modernist aesthetics in architecture, art and product design are familiar to many of the creatively inclined. In soaring glass structures or minimalist canvases we recognize a time of vast technological advance which affirmed the power of human beings to reshape their environment and to break, radically, from the conventions or constraints of the past. Less well-known, but no less fascinating, is the distillation of Modernism in logo design. With the creation of clean visual concepts, graphic designers sought to move away from the mystique they identified with the commercial artist, and to counterbalance an increasingly complicated world with clarity. This unprecedented TASCHEN publication, authored by Jens Muller, brings together approximately 6,000 trademarks, focused on the period 1940-1980, to examine how Modernist attitudes and imperatives gave birth to corporate identity. Ranging from media outfits to retail giants, airlines to art galleries, this sweeping survey of the logo is organized into three design-orientated chapters: Geometric, Effect, and Typographic. Each chapter is then sub-divided into form and style led sections such as alphabet, overlay, dots and squares. Alongside this comprehensive catalog resource, the book features an introduction from Jens Muller on the history of logos, and an essay by R. Roger Remington on Modernism and Graphic Design. Eight designer profiles and eight instructive case studies are also included, with a detailed look at the life and work of such luminaries as Paul Rand, Yusaku Kamekura, and Anton Stankowski, and at such significant projects as Fiat, The Daiei, Inc., and the Mexico Olympic Games of 1968. An unrivalled, encylopedic resource for graphic designers, advertisers, and branding specialists, Logo Modernism is equally fascinating to anyone interested in social, cultural and corporate history, and in the sheer persuasive power of image and form.

Collecting Design Collecting Design

Insiders' Tips on Your Favorite Design and How to Enjoy and Make Profit Adam Lindemann's previous book for TASCHEN, Collecting Contemporary, has been an unprecedented success, introducing the lay reader to collecting contemporary art, with tell-all interviews by the biggest players in the global art market. Where this book was mainly the outcome of Lindemann's personal fascination with the art, Collecting Design, in similar fashion, started when he was furnishing his new house. Art collectors like myself who hung beautiful contemporary paintings on their walls suddenly saw their furniture look sad and tired, Lindemann writes in his preface and relates how hobby became passion and an overwhelming desire to know everything. Which is how this latest volume manages to give such a perfect introduction into collectible design: it follows the path its author went. It all started in the late eighteenth century: artists designed porcelain pieces that became editioned works in high demand. Art Deco to the Wiener Werkstatte, Bauhaus to the Eameses, the French modernists, and a whole bunch of designers you haven't heard of yet, this volume is the best guide to the collectability and overall desirability of the best design for connoisseurs and anybody interested in the way we live today. Collecting Design tells all about an addictive occupation, vintage pieces vs. limited editions, the big names and what to keep an eye on, all from the perspective of a passionate collector meeting market luminaries for in-depth conversations — his fellow collectors (Bruno Bischofberger, Michael Boyd, Peter Brant, Dennis Freedman, Reed Krakoff, Ronald Lauder, Rachel Lehmann), the dealers (Anthony DeLorenzo, Suzanne Demisch, Barry Friedman, Clemence and Didier Krzentowski, Zesty Meyers and Evan Snyderman, Murray Moss, Patrick Seguin, Alasdhair Willis), select tastemakers (Jacques Grange, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Peter Marino, Robert Rubin, Ian Schrager, Axel Vervoordt), and auction experts (Philippe Garner from Christie's, Alexander Payne from Phillips de Pury, Richard Wright, James Zemaitis from Sotheby's). Lindemann writes: Sitting down for hours with 24 experts, I can now discuss the finer points of Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann versus Eileen Gray, Carlo Mollino versus Gio Ponti, of Marc Newson versus Ron Arad, and so on. I hope you will enjoy and profit from this fascinating field as much as I have.

Modernism to the masses: Pioneering designs for affordable postwar homes. The Case Study House program (1945-1966) was a unique event in the history of American architecture. Sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, the program sought to respond to the postwar building boom with prototype modern homes that could be both easily replicated and readily affordable to the average American. Concentrated on the Los Angeles area, the Case Study Houses included 36 model homes commissioned from such major architects of the day as Richard Neutra, Raphael Soriano, Craig Ellwood, Charles and Ray Eames, Pierre Koenig, Eero Saarinen, A. Quincy Jones, and Ralph Rapson. Their criteria included using, as far as is practicable, many war-born techniques and materials best suited to the expression of man's life in the modern world. The results of the program would redefine the modern home and extend influence not only across the United States but around the world. This compact guide includes all of the Case Study Houses with over 150 photos and plans, as well as a map showing locations of all sites, including those that no longer exist. About the series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Architecture series features: an introduction to the life and work of the architect the major works in chronological order information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts and plans).

Dadaism Dadaism
Автор: Жанр: Taschen Год: 2016 Страниц: 96 Дата загрузки: 16 марта 2019
A precursor to Surrealism, the Dada movement stressed the absurd and unpredictable, the illogical and chaotic, lashing out against traditional esthetics and upending artistic conventions. Emerging from the artistic and intellectual milieu of Zurich during World War I, it signaled a re-evaluation of art's cultural relevance in the shadow of industrialized war. Jean Arp, Tristan Tzara, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray were among the most famous proponents of Dada, creating works that dared viewers to expand their notions of what might be considered art. This book explains the impulses and theories that gave rise to Dada, the forerunner of conceptual art. Featured artists: Max Ernst, George Grosz, John Heartfield, Johannes Baader, Hannah Hoch, Raoul Hausmann, Kurt Schwitters, Johannes Theodor Baargeld, Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Man Ray.
