«The past five years have seen a revolution in Chinese architecture — the emergence of independent designers, and a number of new stars — and above all new and interesting buildings that are not the product of direct Western influence. Major foreign firms like OMA/Rem Koolhaas or Herzog & de Meuron are participating in the design of buildings that will have functions during the Games, but Chinese architects, too, have been mobilized in this massive effort to prepare the country for an unprecedented level of world-wide attention.»

Travels in the Interior of North America. In 1832 Maximilian Prince of Wied set out with the Swiss painter Karl Bodmer on an expedition to study the way of life of the North American Indians. Starting at the east coast, they followed the courses of the Ohio. Mississippi and Missouri rivers, until they reached the far northern regions of present-day Montana. While the Prince collected ritual implements, noted his observations and transcribed the intensive conversations he conducted with the Indians. Karl Bodmer created fascinating watercolours. Bodmer portrayed the chieftains and the warriors, the dances and the ceremonies, and even captured the bison on the broad expanses of the prairies — images that the general public had never seen before. Consequently, on their return to Europe, the researchers planned a publication of their experiences, which from 1839 onwards appeared in a small, exquisite edition, and finally comprised a portfolio with 81 plates and two volumes of text. Reproduced from a beautiful hand-coloured copy, which remains to this day in the keeping of the Prince's family, Travels in the Interior of North America presents all 81 of the plates and highlights in numerous text passages important details of the paintings. A selection of texts by Prince Maximilian brings the pictures to life and inspires the reader to decipher their mysteries.

The complete 117 images that triggered a religious revolution. Martin Luther's Bible, published in 1534, was the first complete German Bible and a pivotal event in the history of Christianity. Luther's revolutionary translation, modern in vernacular and interpretation, made the Bible accessible to laypeople, fueled anger and revulsion toward Rome and the Papacy, and begat a new religion: Protestantism. The most desirable copies came with shockingly graphic and politically-charged illustrations, such as those depicting the Whore of Babylon riding a seven-headed beast while wearing the Papal crown, or the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse led by a Turkish soldier. Taschen is publishing the 117 hand-colored woodcut illustrations, created in the workshop of Lucas Cranach. Each is meticulously reproduced from a rare and sumptuous original copy, belonging to the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek in Weimar. M.C. Escher was born in 1898 in Leeuwarden (Netherlands). He received his first drawing lessons during secondary school from F.W. van der Haagen, who also taught him the block printing, thus fostering Escher's innate graphic talents. From 1912 to 1922 he studied at the School of Architecture and Ornamental Design in Haarlem, where he was instructed in graphic techniques by S. Jessurun de Mesquita, who greatly influenced Escher's further artistic development. Between 1922 and 1934 the artist lived and worked in Italy. Afterwards Escher spent two years in Switzerland and five in Brussels before finally moving back to Barn in Holland, where he died in 1972. M.C. Escher is not a surrealist drawing us into his dream world, but an architect of perfectly impossible worlds who presents the structurally unthinkable as though it were a law of nature. The resulting dimensional and perspectival illusions bring us into confrontation with the limitations of our sensory perception.

On 15 December 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794 – 1868), Professor of Botany at the University of Munich and director of the Royal Botanic Garden, was carried to his grave in a coffin covered with fresh palm leaves. These were a reference to his groundbreaking Historia naturalis palmarum: opus tripartitum (Natural History of Palms: a work in three volumes), published between 1823 – 1853. At the time, this encyclopedic treasury contained the sum of human knowledge on the topic, and included 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations, including landscape views of palm habitats and botanical dissections.

Yet the title quite intentionally bridges two worlds, for the book is both a lexicon and a volume of prints, a useful reference book and a feast for the eyes. It’s clear structure, alphabetical order, and fact-rich entries relate to the idea of an encyclopedia. But completeness, however defined — something in any case unattainable — was never the intention. The book's strength lies in its precise selection, in its restriction to a sort of pantheon. Thus the photographers to be found in these pages are those whose contribution to the culture of the photographic image is beyond question, whose work is internationally recognized, presented and discussed — even if controversial.
