21st Century Architecture: Courtyards features courtyard gardens and terraces designed to become part of the interior spaces of the homes they adjoin. Providing an attractive solution for time-poor owners, these low-maintenance gardens function as outdoor rooms and become extensions of everyday living spaces. Many of the outdoor spaces featured are architect-designed, while others are the work of landscape designers. A spectacular garden by landscape architect Jane Irwin is featured, together with designs from the award-winning landscape designer Jack Merlo. While each designer's approach to the outdoors is unique, all demonstrate a mindfulness of the need to bring the outdoors inside — to extend the sense of space on both sides of the floor-to-ceiling glass walls and doors.
