Au début de l'été 1816 — un été pourri -, le hasard réunit au bord du lac de Genève Lord Byron, son médecin Polidori, le poète Shelley et sa très jeune femme, Mary. Pour divertir la compagnie, Byron proposa que chacun écrive un récit terrifiant. Ce pari, une série de conversations nocturnes et un cauchemar inspirèrent à Mary Shelley son roman Frankenstein. Cette anecdote d'histoire littéraire et un jeu de société forment le point de départ de Bravoure. Pour connaître le point d'arrivée, le mieux est encore de retourner le livre et de commencer à la première page.
