Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) was one of the foremost figures in a generation of Italian architects. Born at the dawn of the twentieth century, his work embodied the renewal of the national artistic season and marked the golden age of Italy's global identity. This biography demonstrates Mollino's unique anti-conformist attitude, a design statement that was at odds with the zeitgeist in his home town, Turin, in the 1980s. This brave move, however, paid off and was the reason for the great international interest in his extraordinary creative skills in the fields of architecture, design and photography. Also famous for his love for mountains, cars and aviation, Mollino captured the attention (and the amazement) of the critics for the individuality of his works. Eero Saarinen was born in Finland in 1910. After his family moved to the United States in 1923 Eero graduated from Yale University where he subsequently completed post-graduate work at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. This famous school of architecture and design was directed by his father Eliel and, it was here that Eero met Charles Eames and Florence Schust Knoll. The three became close friends and worked together on some of the most remarkable projects in the history of American and international design.Throughout his career Saarinen divided his time between architecture and design. He designed some of the most important post-Second World War buildings in America (the General Motors Technical Center, the MIT chapel and auditorium, the TWA Terminal at J.F.K. Airport in New York), and his objects, most of which manufactured by Knoll, are absolute icons of contemporary design. He died prematurely at the age of 51 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Born in London, 1959, Jasper Morrison is a British designer renowned for injecting a quietly humorous style into his designs which range from chairs, tables and lamps to the more challenging tram that he designed for the city of Hanover. After graduating in Design at Kingston Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, Morrison opened his office in London where he reworked the 'anonymous' object with the intention of playing with the rules of 'form'. Even in the early stages of his career Morrison followed his decision to design for industrial production and was keen to utilise ready-made industrial components. His constant enhusiasm to embark on collaborations with fellow designers has allowed him to commission many products from them, being allowed by his clients to experiment with many differing materials and technologies. Rather than striving for the excess that upsets most contemporary design, Morrison suggests the concept of the super normal which is clearly visible in the profuse theoretical production that is embodied by his work.
