The Rookwood Pottery was probably the most famous company making art pottery in the United States in the late nineteenth century into the twentieth century, achieving an international reputation and consistently promoting artistic innovation. Proud that the pottery was an artist's studio, not a factory, Rookwood Pottery is known for achieving exceptionally fine glazes and successful experimental designs. By assimilating the strengths of myriad aesthetic movements from the American Art Pottery Movement to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Rookwood Pottery encouraged decorators to try unusual subjects and to explore new techniques. Gerald and Virginia Gordon have created a magnificent collection fully representing all aspects of Rookwood pottery production, which they have generously given to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Philadelphia Museum of Art now has one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of Rookwood pottery in existence. Each piece is gloriously reproduced in colour. «This volume, based on rarely seen Russian archives, traces the history of the silent film poster in Russia, starting with a poster designed by Paul Assaturov («Stenka Razin», 1908) in the style of ancient naïve Russian imagery to the latest advertise- ment for a silent movie by Yuri Pimenov from 1934. Full-page reproductions of 161 Russian silent film posters are presented here in chronological order — from the very beginning of the 20th century until the 1930s. These film posters are unique in their approach to representing films, creating new and original images — more evocative than descriptive. The movie is depicted through the use of expressive typography, geometric forms, minimalist illustrations and their distinctive technique of recreating photographs by hand. Works by famous artists of the time such as Alexander Rodchenko, the Stenberg Brothers, Yakov Ruklevsky, Nikolai Prusakov, Alexander Naumov and others are featured. After the Russian revolution in 1917 and the establishment of the Soviet Union in 1922, cinema played an important role in the dissemination of propaganda for the new regime. A large number of Russian movies were produced during the 1920s and early 1930s, and there was also an increase in films imported from other countries. Advertising posters played a major role to attract large audiences. The book reveals the strong influence of modernist art movements such as constructivism and Dadaism on these art works.»

The Hoffmeister Collection is one of the best and most extensive private collections of antique and historic Turkmen knotted carpets in Western Europe and America. It competes alongside important collections from Western museums as well as those in Russia and Turkmenistan. With almost 200 objects — among which are distinguished carpets and bags — artistic excellence and historical significance come together. As one of the first to do so, Hoffmeister has determined the age of these knotted works of the Turkmen with the aid of radio-carbon techniques. According to the results from the science and technology university ETH in Zurich, the earliest pieces of the collection originate from the sixteenth century. Both the cultural significance of the collection and the scientific and artistic value of its pieces are discussed in this book. The readers can really sense the texture of these knotted wares through the brilliant photography, which carry them away on a journey into the lost world of the Steppes folk of Central Asia.

Interiors '70 presents a selection of exceptional Italian interiors photographed by Carla De Benedetti between 1965 and 1975. This was particularly rich period of creativity in the field of interior design and its protagonists included Joe Colombo, Carla Venosta, Renzo Mongiardino, Alberto Seassaro, Giorgio Pes, Nanda Vigo, and Gae Aulenti. Spaces styled by these masters characterise a transitional period in the evolution of Italian decor that is not easily categorised. However, De Benedetti's strikingly eloquent photographs, made for architectural and interior design magazines of the time, offer an extraordinary commentary on these influential interiors.The dramatically composed images communicate the style of each space with astuteness and an instinct for the designer's intentions. Tunisian — born designer Tom Dixon's career took off in the 1980s when, as an ex-musician and a self-taught welder, he began working for Italian design giant Cappelini. His iconic 'S' chair design produced for Cappelini, and, later, his 'Jack light' created for his own company, Eurolounge, made him an iconic househood name. Dixon's creative process is unusual in that his ideas originate from the tools and materials he has selected, rather than vice versa, creating unique contemporary objects. In 1998, Dixon was appointed Head of Design by household furnishing retailer Habitat, later becoming Creative Director until 2009. Ettore Sottsass was an Italian architect and designer. His work included furniture, jewellery, glass, lighting and office machine design.
