Just as modern Scandinavian architecture captivates with its elegance and high quality so too does its landscape architecture. During the last century Danish and Swedish landscape architecture was amongst the European avantgarde, and in more recent years, the development in Scandinavia along with Spain, the Netherlands and France has captured our interest once again. A new generation of designers has been responsible for creating landscape architectures which met with international praise making the individuals known beyond the borders of Scandinavia. Featuring examples from Topos which include the harbour area in Copenhagen, new squares in Bergen, the redesigning of the railway station area in Jordro/Haninge, and avalanche protection in Iceland, this volume provides an overview of Scandinavia's contribution to the design of new parks, squares and landscapes.

Following on from the success of Calaveras (now out of print), here is another startling collection of extraordinary images to be published in time for the Day of the Dead on November 2nd. Posada and Manilla produced hundreds of prints for the Day of the Dead. These great printmakers, so admired by Diego Rivera, Sergei Eisenstein and the Surrealists used these popular prints to expose hypocrisy and reveal the ultimate absurdity of the human condition.

«No Small Journeys relates to a series of photographs of Denver and its suburbs near the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant, a version of which was published by Aperture under the title Our Lives and our Children in 1983. In recent years, Adams felt it was important to expand the project to emphasize the simple beauty and humanity that can be found in the seemingly improbable environments we have created for ourselves all across America. Rather than focus on some looming disaster, he composed this series as a testament to that unlikely and markedly human beauty, summing up his new reaction to the work with a quotation by Edward Dahlberg: «Homer sang of many sacred towns in Hellas which were no better than Kansas City».»

«Charles Stuckey writes in his essay «Lichtenstein and Surrealism» that, «Searching for a worldwide audience in the 1930s, the Surrealists nowhere received more welcome than in the United States, with important exhibitions at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Julien Levy Gallery quickly became something of an official New York headquarters. By the 1940s when Lichtenstein attended art school at Ohio State University, Surrealism was widely acclaimed as the matrix style for contemporary American abstract art». So no one should be surprised that the young Lichtenstein's work of that era is «fundamentally Surrealist in spirit», and that the style that influenced him as a young man would carry over into his life's work. The paintings and works on paper in Conversations with Surrealism show the movement's continuing power and inspiration through to the 1970s, when Lichtenstein drew on the work of Dali, Magritte and Picasso. The works from this series endow Surrealist archetypes such as dreamlike landscapes with Lichtenstein's distinctive style, weaving the artist himself into an art-historical narrative. Conversations with Surrealism offers a glimpse into the development of some of Lichtenstein's best-known motifs, including his «self-portraits», in which various objects represent the artist's head and face. Includes a work of short fiction by Frederic Tuten, author of The Green Hour.»

The famous Russian collector and literary scholar Nikolai Khardzhiev (1903-1996) was a close friend and admirer of the modern painters, poets and philosophers of his time. Often buying directly from the artists and their families, from the late 1920s Khardzhiev collected work by such masters of the Russian avant-garde as Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov, Olga Rozanova, El Lissitzky, Vasily Chekrygin, Mikhail Matyushin and Vladimir Tatlin, thus compiling one of the greatest collections of this period. As the Soviet regime began to clamp down on Futurism and Suprematism, Khardzhiev sought to acquire anything that would allow him to one day write a history of these movements, and his archives also included manuscripts and rare books, as well as his own correspondence with artists. Russian Avant-Garde provides a full overview of the unique Khardziev-Chaga collection, which has been housed at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam since 1997. The collection contains numerous works on paper, including gouaches, watercolors, Futurist book cover designs, sketches, studies and archival photographs. These items, many of which have never previously been reproduced, greatly deepen our understanding of the sheer range and prolificness of these monumental artists, and Khardzhiev's valiant determination to preserve their work.
