Drawing Surrealism Drawing Surrealism
Автор: Жанр: Prestel Год: 2012 Страниц: 240 Дата загрузки: 23 декабря 2014
Drawing, often considered a minor art, was central to surrealism from the very beginning. Automatic drawing, exquisite cadavers, and frottage are just a few of the techniques invented by surrealists as means to tap into the subconscious realm. While previous books have examined the connection between drawings and surrealist paintings, Drawing Surrealism is the first to recognize the medium as a fundamental form of surrealist expression, and to explore its impact on other media as well. Surrealist collage, photography, and even paintings are presented in the context of drawing as a metaphor for innovation and experimentation. It is also the first book to encompass a wide array of artists on a global scale — from the great figures in surrealist history to lesser-known surrealists from Japan, Central Europe, and the Americas, where the movement had a profound and lasting effect. In addition to brilliant reproductions of drawings and other works by more than 100 artists, this volume also includes a substantial historical essay by the exhibition's curator, as well as informative essays by leading scholars. This ground-breaking book offers a deep understanding of the techniques and concerns that made surrealism such an intimate perceptual revolution.

A talented violinist as well as a painter, Klee drew much of the inspiration for his abstract art from musical rhythms and structures. Like a composer, he developed and harmonized pictorial themes, weaving a complex series of signs and symbols into his painting. The book focuses on Klee's decade-long tenure at the Bauhaus, where the artist's theories and practices first merged. Illustrated throughout with full-colour reproductions of Klee's paintings and etchings, as well as entries from his diaries, this unique study sheds light on an important aspect of Klee's work while providing insights into his development as an abstract artist.

Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals and the Garden of Perfect Brightness Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals and the Garden of Perfect Brightness
Автор: Жанр: Prestel Год: 2011 Страниц: 186 Дата загрузки: 24 августа 2013
Circle of Animals features twelve enormous bronze animal heads, each depicting a segment of the Chinese zodiac. Ai Weiwei's first piece of public art, it is an extraordinary accomplishment in its own right. But as this book explains, the origins and motivation behind the piece are as compelling as the work itself. Ai Weiwei based the sculpture on a similar work that was built for an imperial retreat in the eighteenth century. When the palace was looted by European soldiers, the sculpture was stolen-only seven of the twelve heads survive. By reimagining the work Ai Weiwei confronts uncomfortable truths within Chinese and Western history. This book compares Ai Weiwei's work to the original sculpture; features interviews with Ai Weiwei conducted at various periods during the sculpture's development; offers a historical overview of the events surrounding the original sculpture's looting; and follows the trail of the original heads as they are sold and resold amidst political furore. The book tells the riveting story behind a highly acclaimed piece of modern art, while providing an introduction to one of our generation's most important artists.

Picasso: Black and White Picasso: Black and White
Автор: Жанр: Prestel Год: 2012 Страниц: 224 Дата загрузки: 12 сентября 2017
Picasso Black and White examines the artist's lifelong exploration of a black and white leitmotiv through some 110 paintings and a selection of sculptures and works on paper. Picasso continued the tradition of engaging the color black that had been employed throughout a centuries-long history of Spanish painting by fellow artists Jose de Ribera, Diego Velazquez, Francisco de Zurbaran, and Francisco de Goya. Moreover, he made highly effective use of isolated black, white, and gray hues in a nod to monochromatic grisaille painting and to drawing, line, and form. As this volume attests, the recurrent motif of black and white appears throughout Picasso's oeuvre, including his blue and rose periods, his investigations into Cubism and Surrealism, his interpretations of historical subject studies for his celebrated painting Guernica, World War II, and an homage to old masters, as well as the powerful paintings of his last years. Featuring reproductions of more than 150 works, this book examines the extraordinary complexity and power of these expressive artworks, which purge color in order to highlight their formal structure. Including essays by leading Picasso scholars, this book is a unique and coherent perspective on one of the world's most innovative and influential artists.

The first portrait; the first realistic animal drawing; the first night-time scene; the first nude study; the first still life. These firsts and others are closely explored in twenty-five chapters that help the general reader and art lover alike understand how innovation spurred artistic growth through the years and around the world. Each chapter opens with a specific artist or work that introduced a new concept and includes examples of masterpieces that exemplify them. Colourful illustrations and lively texts show how each concept influenced other contemporary works as well as future generations. For example, self-portraits painted by Durer, van Gogh, and even Andy Warhol can be traced back to the first recorded self-portrait by Jan van Eyck. A Miraculous Draught of Fishes, by fifteenth-century artist Konrad Witz, paved the way for later landscapes by El Greco, Constable, and Wyeth. Arranged chronologically, the chapters in the book can be studied individually to deepen our understanding of a particular aspect of art or as a whole — to appreciate the ever-changing patterns of artistic development.

Sense of Place: European Landscape Photography Sense of Place: European Landscape Photography
Автор: Жанр: Prestel Год: 2012 Страниц: 276 Дата загрузки: 7 декабря 2014
Is Europe a union in name only? How does the land we live on contribute to our culture? How does it divide or unite a collection of cultures? These important questions are at the root of this pictorial examination of Europe's heterogeneous landscape. This book brings together images from twenty-seven European Union nations and from prominent artists such as Olafur Eliasson (Denmark), Thomas Struth (Germany), Carl De Keyzer (Belgium), Massimo Vitali (Italy), and Celine Clanet (France). The book shows how landscape photography in particular offers critical insights into the characteristics of a place, inviting viewers, through a subjective lens, to form their own feelings toward that place. Organized into three broad geographic zones, it offers exquisite depictions of Europe's wonderfully varied geography — shorelines and fjords, mountains and plains, farmland and urban centres — as it seeks to understand the source of the continent's diversity and unity.

Lichtenstein Posters Lichtenstein Posters
Автор: Жанр: Prestel Год: 2013 Страниц: 152 Дата загрузки: 17 октрября 2016
Roy Lichtenstein's art is most recognizable for its trademark Benday dots and two-dimensional planes, cartoon-like qualities that placed him at the forefront of the American Pop Art scene. With its heavy emphasis on America's consumer culture, Lichtenstein's style lends itself easily to the poster genre. This volume opens with his earliest poster, designed for his first exhibition at the Leo Castelli gallery in 1962, and closes with his last, which he completed in the year of his death. An additional section features reproductions from the Claus von Olden collection and includes posters and flyers that were produced all over the world using Lichtenstein's iconic motifs. The works reflect Lichtenstein's prolific imagination and ability to adapt his vision to the promotion of music and film festivals, theatrical performances, museums, restaurants, public service messages, as well as his own exhibitions. An essay by Jurgen Doring expounds upon Lichtenstein's development as an artist who blurred the boundaries between low — and high-brow art. The book also includes an illustrated biography of the artist.
