«C'est peut-être cela l'enfer: «Hanter les couloirs du métro pour l'éternité avec un manteau jaune.» Mais en châtiment de quelle faute? Cette femme en jaune que la narratrice croise un jour au métro Châtelet et en qui elle reconnaît sa mère, de quoi est-elle coupable ? D'avoir menti? On la croyait morte au Maroc et elle vivrait à Paris? D'avoir abandonné sa fille, celle qu'on appelait la Petite Bijou, au temps où elle rêvait de faire carrière dans le spectacle ? Seuls les noms propres permettraient peut-être de retracer le passé, de savoir qui était vraiment cette femme énigmatique : Suzanne Cardères, selon l'état civil ou la comtesse Sonia O'Dauyé du temps de ses rêves de grandeur, ou La Boche après la guerre quand elle dut s'enfuir au Maroc pour ne pas être tondue ou encore Trompe-la-Mort alors qu'elle survit misérablement dans un coin de la banlieue parisienne? Le dernier Modiano est un roman policier mélancolique sans coupables où il n'y a que des victimes, personnages en déréliction comme cette Petite Bijou qui ne parvient pas à se remettre d'une enfance sans père, sans même l'amour d'une mère, de toutes ces blessures que la vie quotidienne ne fait que raviver. Et qui n'a pour toute consolation que la musique des mots, le nom d'un café dans le Paris des années cinquante, un poème à la radio dans une langue inconnue, le nom mystérieux d'hommes et de femmes qui s'inventent une identité pour mieux oublier leur vie sans attrait. La musique de Modiano, ce style si singulier, n'aura jamais été plus poignante que dans cette étrange balade sur les traces d'une enfance ravagée. -Yves Bellec»

Au cours de sa recherche, il recueille des bribes de la vie de cet homme qui était peut-être lui et à qui, de toute façon, il finit par s'identifier. Comme dans un dernier tour de manège, passent les témoins de la jeunesse de ce Pedro Mc Evoy, les seuls qui pourraient le reconnaître: Hélène Coudreuse, Fredy Howard de Luz, Gay Orlow, Dédé Wildmer, Scouffi, Rubirosa, Sonachitzé, d'autres encore, aux noms et aux passeports compliqués, qui font que ce livre pourrait être l'intrusion des âmes errantes dans le roman policier.
